The Foodie: Lost Time at Before ‘n’ After Café

Hello Everyone!

Sorry for the week off! As always, my schedule is becoming rather crowded and now my full-time schedule has been extended until the end of the year…literally. I am noticing that a lot of posts I used to do are becoming less frequent and for that I do apologize, BUT I am back with The Foodie and today I’m reviewing Before ‘n’ After Café!

DISCLAIMER: I was not paid, asked, or offered any discount for this review. This review is based solely on my own experience and opinion as a first time customer and the meal was paid for entirely by my party. Thank you for understanding.

before n after cafe

I had seen this small but incredibly adorable cafe, once, when my friends and I decided to get our nails done. I wanted to stop by, but they were unfortunately closed. Almost a year later I found the chance to swing by for a quick meal and finally do the review I’ve been wanting to do!

bac interior exterior

Before ‘n’ After Café is located in Stafford, VA on Walpole Street in a gorgeous town center.  The outside is decorated with a large, adorable clock and patio seating. There is plenty of parking throughout the town center so there was definitely no issue finding a spot. When Anthony and I arrived, it seemed very lively outside as there was a large group or party happening. This wasn’t too much of a bother, honestly. However we decided to eat inside, as it was much more quiet and less chilly. The inside was decorated with a little bit of everything. From cute clock and time motifs to quotes from a random pirate on the left. All in all, it was crazy yet comfortable…except for one thing: there was a TV. I know this is really just a personal preference and many of you may say, ” I am just being picky.” However my reasoning is this: When I go to a cafe I go specifically for the atmosphere. I enjoy quiet surroundings where I can enjoy my food without worrying about people yelling at a sports game or being mindlessly distracted by something I am constantly surrounded. Granted this little pet peeve of mine won’t take away from what I thought of the food, it is solely a personal preference.

chai tea

When we arrived, we were immediately greeted by two employees who took my order: A Chai Tea Latte with soy milk and  Tomato Bisque Soup. The first to come out was the Chai Tea Latte and I was incredibly happy that they were accommodating to my dairy allergy. My first sip was heaven; the perfect temperature, the perfect ratio of milk to tea so the chai was not overpowering compared to others I’ve had in the past. Each sip got better and better and when I reached the end I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of tea leaves or any gritty textures. It was incredible. I applaud Before ‘n’ After Café on their wonderful latte craftsmanship as it left a lasting impression.

kosher dog

After the latte arrived, I was notified that they were out of the Tomato Bisque Soup and gave me the option of choosing anything else on the menu regardless of price. As generous as the offer was, I decided to choose something as close to the original price as possible and went with the Kosher Pretzel Dog. A part of me was craving something far from healthy and another part never had a hot dog on a pretzel bun before and really wanted to try it. Well, I went for it.

When the plate…or platter arrived I must admit that I was a little underwhelmed with the presentation. The portion size was incredibly spot on and filling without being too full. Although there was a giant white and empty space in the middle of my platter. My suggestion, in this case, would be to use a smaller plate or platter to accommodate the amount of food they use. I also was a bit put off by how greasy the pretzel bun was. I’m not too sure if it was the butter if they used butter, but it made me contemplate for a few seconds on how I should eat it without making a big mess. After coming to terms with the fact that my fingers were going to get messy and I should just use the napkins given, I took a bite. The pretzel bun, greasiness aside, was actually quite delicious. The texture fit perfectly for a gourmet hot dog and added a bit more flavor than that of a regular white bread bun. The hot dog was cooked all the way through and tasted…well, like a hot dog. I didn’t eat many of the chips since Anthony decided to devour them but I am pretty sure they weren’t made by the restaurant and were more than likely store bought. And then there was the pickle which was delicious by itself, so no need for judgement there.

Overall, I was happy with the service provided! My chai tea latte was to die for while my kosher pretzel dog was better than good, but the presentation and chips left more to be desired. I would suggest this café for people who are looking for a more relaxed cafe than that of a traditional coffee house as Before ‘n’ After Café offers alcohol and meal choices alongside coffee and pastries.

STR’s Pre-Order Excitement: What Do We Have Pre-Ordered?

Hey Homies!

Yeah, never again. Sorry.

So, this year has been a fantastic year for game releases! I’ve never pre-ordered anything before but this year I feel like I’m pre-ordering everything…(Lord have mercy on my bank account.) I guess I’m using today’s post to share with you what games I’ve already pre-ordered and games I am waiting to pre-order.

Super Smash Bros. 3DS
If you are new to the blog and don’t know, I did a post on this game previously when it was first announced. Back then, we only had three or four new characters with a couple veterans. Now, there is just a little over a month until the release date! Since that post there have been many additions to the roster. Nintendo has already done a Nintendo Direct on it and it seems ridiculously awesome. As a huge fan of the SSB series, I can’t wait to see how the game play is on the 3DS versus the WiiU. Also, I am thinking about making Palutena my main fighter!
Super Smash Bros. 3DS is set to release on October 9. 2014.

project diva

Hatsune Miku Project Diva f 2nd
Please don’t judge me for the large amounts of Miku on the blog lately…sorry. Anyways, I’ve always enjoyed rhythm games since the times of Dance Dance Revolution despite the fact that I have little to no rhythm. I am so excited to see Sega bringing Project Diva and even Project Mirai to the states! I had no idea that pre-ordering the game from GameStop would mean that I would get an extra downloadable costume that strongly resembles a Cowboys’ cheerleader costume along with 3 downloadable characters. I’m super excited to play and hopefully gain some sort of rhythm from playing.
Hatsune Miku Project Diva f 2nd is set to release on November 28, 2014.

Hyrule Warriors
Do you all have any idea how stupidly excited I was when a Dynasty Warriors and Legend of Zelda collaboration was announced!? I may have poo’d myself…just kidding!! But I was seriously excited and already felt a wave of nostalgia running through me. I remember playing Dynasty Warriors on my PS2 and loving the fluid game play and the awesome female fighters. Of course, Hyrule Warriors is not disappointing in the female character department as Zelda, Lana, Agitha, Midna, and even Ruto make their way to the roster! The game play looks just as fluid if not more than what I remember and the attention to details is close to perfection. I believe if you pre-ordered through GameStop there are DLC costumes.
Hyrule Warriors is set to release on September 18, 2014.

project mirai

Project Mirai -Remixed- (Working Title)
This 3DS addition to the oncoming state-side Hatsune Miku titles is such a new announcement that GameStop has yet to update their website on it. Actually, it was announced not even two months ago and is set to release sometime in 2015! Judging from the initial release article, this title will be based off of the Japan release titled “Project Mirai 2.” The game play is much like that of the Project Diva series with the exception of character design. Project Mirai characters resemble that of their Nendroid figurines from Good Smile Company. I think this would be a fantastic game to play on the road since there’s not much reading and includes 47 songs that are catchy and you’re bound to like them at some point.
Project Mirai -Remixed- is set to release in 2015.

Pokemon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire
You guys already know how big of a Pokénerd I am and the moment I heard that one of the best generations was getting a remake I had a mini heart attack of excitement! We’ve gotten a few glimpses of this remake and what we know is that this will be a different storyline than the original. Mega evolutions will be appearing and with more pokemon able to do so. Secret bases are online and it should have a lot of the same game play as that of Pokemon X & Y. I am hoping to have a lot of the same character customization and more mixed generations of Pokemon appearing as they did in the previous batch.
Pokemon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire are set to release on November 21, 2014.

Oily Skin Take Down!

Hey Hey & Howdy!
I am back this week with a beauty post, but before that…Miku Expo! Did you all enjoy the expectation posts? We are so excited that we are thinking about having t-shirts made with the new STR Mascot image on it!! When we make the final design we will be sure to share it with you all! Anyways…I would catch you up on life but it is still work and school! Only difference is I’m starting to play Pokémon with the intent of catching a shiny Pokémon and playing the Looker Side-quest. (Insert obnoxious sigh here.)

oily skin

So, as you all may know; I have ridiculously oily skin that requires a rather large amount of care. I have a feeling some of you are looking for ways and products to help maintain oily skin. I have found a skin regimen that has been working for me for the latter part of summer! I’ll show you all of the products I use both day and night.

For morning I tend to keep it relatively simple with two to three products. For cleansing I use TheFaceShop Charcoal Cleanser I showed you all in a previous post. Because this cleanser doesn’t do much in terms of exfoliating I use my Sasatinnie Exfoliator that I purchased from Sasa.Com! After rinsing I go ahead with a quick splash of super cold water and continue to pat dry with a clean towel.

Once my face is dried I use my TheFaceShop Calming Seed Calming Mist Toner. I’ll be the first to admit that I had no idea toners could be so helpful, but holy hand grenade they are! Moving on, I apply my TheFaceShop Calming Seed Skin-resting Cream as a moisturizer and that pretty much concludes my morning routine.

I will say that if my face seems especially oily or my skin appears shiny, I will do a quick spray of TheFaceShop Herb Water Powder Mist which has a powdered finish and makes the skin appear more matte.

At night, I spend a bit more time on my skin regimen. I begin with my St. Ives Green Tea Cleanser. Speaking of which, I swear by it as it is hypoallergenic and has kept my skin looking its best for years now. After about a minute of massaging the cleanser into my skin, I’ll rinse with relatively warm water and apply the same toner as listed above.

This next step is entirely optional but I have found it incredibly necessary as of late. After applying the toner and allowing my face to dry I will use my TheFaceShop Lovely ME:EX Magic Pink Powder Mask and leave it on all night. It has calamine in it which is actually quite nice and calming for my trouble skin and has helped with my cystic acne if I accidentally (or purposefully) intake dairy. I highly suggest this mask if you’re looking for a way to calm a breakout or have persistent redness.

If I decide not to use the mask I will let my skin rest after applying the toner and head straight to bed!

Well that is it for today’s post! I hope you all enjoyed this post and found it helpful or beneficial in some way or other. I’d love to hear what you all thought of today’s post; if you have any products or own any of the products listed, please comment down below on your thoughts and suggestions! If you’d like to suggest topics and ideas for future posts, please click the “contact” button above! I hope you all enjoy your week and to all you students out there…WELCOME BACK. It sucks, I know. Anyways…

REMEMBER: Fall is right around the corner…as is Super Smash Bros. 3DS.
